Fame or Shame Week 2 Results

Two weeks are in the books because nobody picked the Colts or the Eagles.
So how do we all look?  Some of you look uglier than others, but genetics was never the issue.

Only one guy strayed from the pack and was successful and that was Mike T who chose the Texans.
Everyone else is a sheep and should be ashamed of yourself.
The Best pick of the week would have been Washington which would have gotten you 41 points, but no one was ever going to pick the Racist Skins while RG3 was starting.

One Hand to End Them All

After watching the video a couple of different times I was led to wonder if there was a secret handshake, a glance or maybe multiple meetings in the bathroom during the improbably long 9 hour final table.

"Hey Vinny, I'm thinking that if we go over 9 hours we should try to create situations where we all just go all in and let the dealer sort it out"
"Oh George, it will look funny if not everyone has a good hand though."
"Vinny, if I raise my left eyebrow that means I have a good hand, if everyone else follows suit then we do this thing."
"Ok George, but lets hope it doesn't come to that."

And the seed was planted.

When you look at it from the Fish perspective (and I do believe that I'm pretty good with that point of view) then it's not too hard to see how this ended up happening.

First there was some fatigue happening, nine hours of final table poker is a long time.  Every thought, every decision, every mistake could lead to a lesser payout or a greater payout.  The money is in the back of your mind and you know that you are one more elimination away from being better off than you were one hand ago.  So you over think everything, you over analyze everything and next thing you know your brain goes into shut down mode.  "Oh hey look, 6 3 off, they'll never see that coming."

Second, there is a sense of maybe I can just get lucky with this hand because in the back of our mind we all know that luck is going to have to take our hand and guide us to that huge victory.  The guy with 88 knew exactly that he needed to fold but at the same time if he gets out of the way then the chips are even more stacked against him.  Does he have what it takes to play another few hours trying to pick spots to double up multiple times in order to get to even and then chip away and win the tourney or do you stick it in with 88 and hope to spike an 8 and be in position to take this down with just a few well timed hands?

It's not often that I actually even play 9 hours of poker let alone 9 hours where I have to be on my best game and behavior for the entire duration.  I've gone home mentally exhausted after several sessions with only hundreds of dollars on the line.  I'm pretty sure in the video above that I would have gotten it in quicker than most of those guy and, in fact, I would have done so with pretty much anything at this point.
You know, especially after Vinny raised his eyebrow and George followed suit.

NFL Week 2

In Week 1 I went  10 - 6 which is pretty respectable and a lot better than losing every single parlay card I had out there.
This week Lets hope for the better even though I started the week with a loss.

Steelers over Ravens
Miami over Buffalo
Detroit over Carolina
Cincy over Atlanta
Saints over Browns
Patriots over Vikings
Cardinals over Giants
Titans over Cowboys
Jaguars over Redskins
Seahawks over Chargers
Bucs over Rams
Broncos over Chiefs
Packers over Jets
Texans over Raiders
49ers over Bears
Eagles over Colts

As for my actual sports bets?
All of these are through Westgate where I hung out with Coach to watch the Thursday night game.

This week I made $22 worth of parlay bets.  Two with 3 teams, one with 4 teams, One with 5 teams and two with 11 teams.
The one 11 team has all the odds and spreads jacked up and I put $2 on that because if I lose the rest and win that I cover my bets for the week.

Current Sports Betting - ($15)

Odds and Ends

Man, I'm sitting here bored while the kid is sitting next to me playing Spider-man Web of Shadows on the Xbox 360 and I just finished a small session of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls.

The whole reason I am bored is because I've got this deep down craving to go play some poker.  Oh, I want to stack some out of town fish and drink a few beers and come home a couple hundred dollars richer.

The wife is sleeping in the other room because she slept for shit last night and I'm about to flip a coin to figure out if I'm going to wake her up to let her know I'm going to play poker or if I'll just fire up a video game and do that for the rest of the night.

My first week of Sports Betting went horribly awry when the Saints, Patriots and Bears all decided that they were allergic to winning.  One or a combination of those teams cost me on every parlay card that I had out there.

Tomorrow I am planning on going over to one of the Stations and putting in a Parlay card and hitting up Alienate for their "Pick every game right and win $150,000" thing.
Right now my sports betting (in a casino) is at negative $20.  However, that will all change this weekend as I will pick better AND win at least one of my parlay cards.

Tomorrow is a busy day though.
Gotta hit up the DMV so that I can renew my drivers license.
Gotta baby doc appointment - this is the 20 week one complete with another Ultrasound which will depict my spawn showing off his wiener for the world.
There is Soccer Practice at night which I have wormed my way out of by telling my love that I absolutely have to watch the Steelers Game because I'll die if I don't.
I'll probably have to watch said game at a casino somewhere which will involve poker.  I could watch it at a bar but then I'd be forced to drink heavily and might require a ride home.

I should get a hold of the ford dealership and get my car in to have a tire looked at, it appears to be allergic to air recently.

Fame or Shame Week 1 Results

So the results are out for week one of the Fame or Shame Pick'em contest and lets just say that there are 9 idiots out there who decided to pick losers and start week 2 in the hole.  Now, this could be a creative way for people to make a dramatic come from behind victory but I'm really doubting that anyone bothered to put that much thought into it.

Five Brilliant people took the Eagles and earned themselves 27 points.
Serge, Craig O, Sergio, Joe G, and Bill R.

Five slightly less intillegent people took the 49ers and earned 21 points (and much like the 9ers they just can't quite get first place).
Nick G, Carnell, Jason D, Randy and Jason R.

Two average people went with the "Denver has a good Offense" strategy and earned 17 points.
Tony V and Craig T

Two people probably think this is a regular survival contest and picked the Steelers for 3 points.
Mike T and my Old Man!!!

Now to the real idiots

Bears lovers out there, you got stuck for 3.
Bosko, Stephanie O, Rob L and Claudia

One idiot picked the Cowboys even know they were 100% guaranteed to lose
Mauri

Four people think that Tom Brady can win any game all by himself and suffered with Negative 13 points
Spank, Jake, Steph T, and Bill M

As of this writing the best team to pick was the Vikings which would have earned you 1st place and 38 points - but Y'all too stupid to make that play.

Week 1 NFL Season

So now that I"m undefeated in my NFL Picks for the season I'd like to just take a bow and end it.
Er, I mean here is the rest of my week 1 picks - lets see how good or bad I'll be over the course of the full year.

Saints over Falcons
Vikings over Rams
Steelers over Browns
Eagles over Jags
Raiders over Jets (I really just want the Jets to lose - I feel like this is a bad pick though).
Bengals over Ravens
Bears over Bills
Redskins over Texans
Chiefs over Titans
Pats over Phins
Panthers over Bucs
9ers over Cowgirls
Bronco's over Colts
Lions over Giants
Cardinals over Chargers - though this game will be 100% Rivers Dependent.

As for my actual sports bets?
I ended up doing two different Parlay cards - a 5 Team one at a Station and a 6 team one at Aliante.
I should probably stick to 3 team ones and go for the most sure bets of all of them to build my roll but I'm giving myself $20 per week so I felt like doing more the first week.

Aliante
Saints -2.5
Vikings +4
Bears -7
Patriots -5
Panthers +2
49ers -5

Station
Steelers -6.5
Eagles -10.5
Bears -6.5
Chiefs -3.5
Pats -4.5

Let's see how this experiment goes.

Parenting and Missing the Opening Game

So Today is the start of the NFL Season and at 6:30 the game is going to kick off and where will I be?
At my boy's soccer practice watching a bunch of pre-teens practice and try to get better at a sport they love instead of watching the one I love.

However, all is not lost as I do have a Verizon phone and it appears as though I can pay $5/month to stream Thursday Night, Sunday Night and Monday Night games plus whatever bullshit local games get played on Sundays (read Raiders and Cardinals mostly).

I had debated going with NFL Rewind so that I could watch the games after they happened but knowing myself I would probably not use it enough to make it worth whatever I paid for it.  So, $5 to watch the game tonight is reasonable to a baller like me.

This year I am setting aside some of those amazing poker winnings that I have had recently so that I can bet one parlay card every week through the season.  I figure $20 per week is reasonable enough that it won't make or break me.

I'm also going to copy Coach and put my predictions out there and keep track of what my record is every week to see how bad my prognostication abilities are.  I just used a big word on purpose, I feel like Punxsutawney Phil.

I'll get to the weekend picks in another post but I figure that I should at least put up tonight's pick so that everyone doesn't think I cheated just to get one right.

Greenbay vs Seattle
Seattle's Defense is going to be key here and it will not come down to a last second Hail Mary like a previous encounter.
Seattle will win but I am not predicting scores.

Either tomorrow or Saturday after work I will head to one of the 3 million local sports books out here and book my parlay card for the week - I don't know which one I'll go to but I really don't think it matters all that much (unless one of you convinces me otherwise).

Blogger Poker - the Straight Story

It wasn't going to be for me but I saw an announcement that there was going to be a TBC Invitational, however it was on an evening where I had to work late.  I just assumed that I would't be able to make and and put it out of my mind.

Then while working I get a text (not a twat, not a facebook message but an honest to goodness old fashioned text) from Rob who happens to reside yonder.  The TBC Invititational was in full swing with Coach and Triple P and he wanted to know if my fat ass would be coming down.

I knew PPP was in town and really wanted to meet up with him and once I got this text I figure'd I should at least give it the old college try since I had failed to find the time on my days off to get down to the strip and share in some booze or poker.

I got a hold of the wife and gained permission to go out or the evening and then switched my attention to my boss who let me leave work early and next thing you know I'm driving down to the Venetian searching my bank accounts for a spare $200 bucks so that I could play some poker with people who I enjoy conversing with.   Yes, I live in Vegas and pretty much the only time I get out to play poker is to hang out with people who make the table worse to sit at and give me less options for stacking opportunities.
Total Fish

When I arrived I got seated at a different table while waiting for something to open up on the table of fun.
I cannot complain, however, because I did get to enjoy this view for the entire time I was there.

This was not the best pic I could snap but it was far from the worst as well.  But, it's hard to snap a nice ass sitting in a room full of other people, supervisors and people watching camera's.  Last thing I would have wanted was someone to spot it and point it out to said tush.  Oh, I spent more time looking at that arse than I spent looking at my cards.  Good thing a seat change opened up so quickly.

At my new table I enjoyed grabbing the 10 seat (or is it the 9 seat, I didn't pay attention to how many seats are at the V tables) and to my right was Coach and then TBC.  To my Left was a dealer but then the #1 seat occupied by RVP and the #2 occupied by PPP and the #3 by a guy who I think Tony announced 30 or so times was from AVP (which, I do believe doesn't even exist any longer).

So, I'm in the middle of all the bloggers like the fluffy filler that I am.  I sat down with $200 (well, a little less since I lost some at the previous table while not paying full attention).

I didn't have a whole lot going on for me early so I decided to take this passive table and steal  a few pots.  I raise with 42off and miss everything but take it down with a continuation bet.  I show my cards for effect but it appears as most people were not paying attention.
Next hand I get 72off and also raise that shit up and flop 2 pair.  However, I take that down with no one wanting to play either.
Later on I got 42 again and flopped an open ended draw after I had raised pre-flop but when I raised a guy who bet into me everyone decided to go away.
That was pretty much the end of my crap and where the "running good" came into play.

One of my two biggest wins came when I raised and flopped a gut shot.  A guy bets $15 into me and gets called by TBC which I also call and I think someone else comes along.  The turn brings out my straight.  The guy bets $35 and TBC comes along so I push.  Folds to the guy who bet $35 who is thinking about it and starts to stack his money up to the amount of the bet that I put out when Tony starts to go bat-shit crazy.

First Tony hates the fact that the dealer did not pull in the $35 from everyone so that all that was left out there was the $101 that was currently owed.  He mentions it to the dealer who says he has it under control and Tony doesn't like this so he reaches into the pot and starts to try to move the money out of the way himself.  The dealer takes the money back and sets it out like it was telling Tony that he has it under control and to leave it alone.  Tony won't let it die though and repeatedly tells the dealer to pull the $35 out.
The guy who the action is on finally asks Tony if he has a problem because he's the one trying to make the decision which you can tell just angers Tony some more.  Finally the guy decides to fold which I'm convinced was 99% because of Tony and his actions.
It is then Tony's turn to act and he starts going on about how I'm just trying to send him to the Machines and he finally calls.
I flip up my straight and tony I believe has something involving  flush draw and a straight draw - he started talking about having 15 outs and how he practically had to call.  Either way my hand holds and I am now sitting with 2 buy-ins instead of just one.

Over the next 15 minutes Tony keeps talking about how the dealer was in the wrong and unjustly trying to influence the other guy to PUSH ALL IN by leaving that $35 out there instead of pulling the bets in.

A few hands later Tony is on the button and the dealer only gives him one card.  When it's Tony's turn to act he is just sitting there, not doing anything at all and I point to him casually to remind him that it's his turn to act when he flips out that he only has one fucking card and has already told the dealer who just ignored him (Coach and I both did not hear this statement).  The dealer apologizes and says he didn't hear him and gives him another card and Tony just chucks his cards across the table while bitching that the dealer is ignoring him to piss him off.
The fact that Tony didn't end up busting all his chips during this temper tantrum was actually the most impressive part of the evening for me.

Eventually Rob leaves and Tony Bums a ride so I slide over to sit beside PPP for a bit.  While down there I raise to $15 with ATs and flop the nuts.  I end up getting two shorties all in on the flop which included two to a flush.
The Turn pairs the board and the river puts a 3rd flush card out there.
I tabled my hand after the flop and in an act of pure miracle both guys mucked after the river.  One flopped the bottom straight and the other guy never showed.

All in all it was a fun night of bullshitting and cards with some guys I haven't seen in quite a while.
I promise that I'm going to make a much better effort to get out and play when people are in town even though I might not play a whole lot any other time.
Also, I think I might give Sports Betting a shot this year - but just NFL.

This is what my chip stack looked like when I left, thanks to PPP's camera.  All of this was possible because I flopped 2 straights, hit 3 gut shots (cheaply) and rivered an open ender or two.  No pairs, no sets, no boats or flushes, all straights - weird night.

And this photo is just too good to not share.

Up next will hopefully be a poker session that includes Alaskagal, Stumpy, Cokeboy and Michelle - but first I have to get to Friday and make it to the game.

August has Blown in

The year continues to march forward at such a rapid pace and things that I thought I wanted to do have been put to the back burner like playing poker and gambling at real money USA casinos.

I mean, it seems like just yesterday but I guess it was really closer to 2 months ago that I was all excited about getting back into poker (and craps) and I think that lasted all of 5 sessions before the real world bore down on me with its demands and expectations.  A wife, a kid and another on the way have all eaten into my free time more than truly expected.

I have plans, most of them unfulfilled.   Why, this past Tuesday was the PS4 release of The Last of Us and my whole goal was to pick it up and spend my two days off playing it.
Tuesday ended up with a trip to Wet n Wild, taking the kids and some of their friends along as a pre-birthday celebration.  A fun time was had by all (well, except for me because I have always hated pools).  The day was a success and I'm happy it happened.
Wednesday I started to play some of TLoU but then my 8 year old wanted to watch me play.  He can't really handle horror movies and as such I think this game is going to be too intense for him.  Plus, when he watches he thinks we should be taking turns so any time that I die he thinks he should try and I'm not willing to allow that to happen with a majority of the games that I play until he gets a little older.

However, on that same front - we have begun playing Injustice because it was put on sale on PS+ for $8.40 at one point and even though I generally don't get into fighting games that's a price that I'm willing to spend.

Next week we are leaving for California for 5 or so days and this is going to be relaxation time for papa grrouch.  We will be bringing along my wife's brother and his kid plus her sisters kid and taking the 3 of them to Disney for one day.  I feel like we'll spend about 8 grand on that trip and there is where all my poker money will have went to.  But, the rest of the time we will do a little shopping, a little sight seeing and most importantly a little beach time.  While I hate pools I absolutely love the beach.
Hopefully my sunburn from Wet n Wild will have went away by then so I'm not doubling up on the pain.

In other news I'm trying to increase my activity levels as my goal, once August 10th hits, will be to beat my step total every single day for a year (as calculated by my Fitbit).  I've also gone into a weekly competition with a guy from work who just got a Fitbit as well.  We said something minor each week so it will probably be something like the loser buys the winner a Mountain Dew.  I'll be requesting a Super Big Gulp of the Solar Flare from 7-11 which, while delicious, doesn't actually taste like a soda at all.  It tastes like fruit punch just whoring off the Mt Dew name.

And one final thought - it's almost time for football season to begin and as such I'm going to be starting a Pick-Em league made up of co-workers and friends across the states.  This will most likely be $20 to enter and I'm pretty much going to be copying Lucki Ducks format because that was pretty damn fun.
No MoJo's allowed :)

If anyone is interested please email me or post a message.  I am going to have everything set up by the end of August so we can begin week 1.

100 Days Cranky day 2

Now I don't believe that I'll be typing up a new and separate blog entry for every single day of this 100 day challenge of mine.  Some times I might go a week in between but I'll at least have the brief posts up on the BookofFace or my Twatter account.  However, some days are going to warrant their own posting.

Today is a carry over from information gleaned last night.
But before I get to that I have to give you some back story.

On July 3rd my kids sperm donor came to the house and picked an argument over some fireworks that were bought last year.  Those fireworks have since disappeared because I threw them out when my kid and some of the neighbor kids were sneaking them out of the garage and playing with them.  Eight year old's have no need to be playing with explosives, and so I warned him to leave them alone and that they were for the 4th of July.  A couple days later I noticed someone got into them again and so I tossed them and let him know.

Fast forward to July 3rd and this sperm donor wants to have a talk because he feels I have no right to throw away something that he paid for and I explain to him that if he actually cared he wouldn't have left them in my garage to begin with.  Plus, it's my house and I can do whatever the hell I please to protect the children.  He argue's that because he is homeless he didn't have the ability to do anything with the fireworks and he is not happy when I inform him that that is really not my problem.  They were left behind, misused and I threw them out.

Somewhere during this friendly little talk I ended up knocked out in my garage and he fled the scene.  Police were called and the best they could do was tell me to call them again whenever he decides to come back since they do not have a physical address where they can track him down.

Fast forward to last night when my boy is out playing with some friends, they decide to walk to the 7-11 and buy some drinks.  Sperm donor happens to be there at the same time (first time they have seen each other since July 3rd) and they talk a bit and whatever.
Last night our kid informs my wife that his sperm donor told him to sneak out tomorrow at 7pm and meet him somewhere again.
A grown ass fucking man teaching a child to be sneaky, underhanded and untrustworthy.  Yep, lets just have him grow up just like his sperm donor.

Being that I work tonight I'm not exactly sure how everything is going to play out but I'm quite irritated at the whole situation.  I'm pretty damned grrouchie, you could even call me a bit cranky.

Oh, it's going to be a bittersweet day when I get to have the cops haul his ass off to jail for what he did because I know that the situation will somehow involve the child having to bare witness again (yes, this will be the second time he will have had to watch his sperm donor get arrested for violence).  But, it's a life lesson.  There are consequences for your actions.

100 Days Cranky

I've been seeing it for a while now on the Book of Face and just kind of ignored it, but like most virus's and STD's it's spreading.  This morning I woke up to a few more people participating in it and decided that we needed the antithesis because, well just because.

Lets hope this spreads like the clap as well
#100DaysCranky
Day 1

I woke up tired and sore with a headache, similar to how I went to bed.  This was the longest I have slept in a while and I really don't feel good for it.
My shoulders are tense.  I need a good long rub and tug to make this day any better.

About two weeks ago I went to the doctor because I was having some pain in one of my wrists (insert all of your masturbation jokes here) and was told it could possibly be Gout or Tendinitis and the ensuing blood eliminated Gout from the equation.  I was given a prescription to help with the inflammation and told to follow up afterwards with results.
The pain mostly went away while taking the pills and I was given hope but here I sit, no more pills to take and the pain is starting to creep back into my wrist as if to laugh at me for trying to get rid of it.  I'm debating on whether to get a hold of the doc now or wait and see if the pain comes back full force.  I'm going to be quite annoyed (cranky even) if this is something that is going to plague me over my last 40 years.

I don't work until 1:30 and I have no Mt Dew to get me through!

Hanging Tough this past week

This past week I took the wife to the New Kids on the Block concert and through my sitonmyFaceBook page I got a lot of crap from some people who know me.  But, whatever.
Truth of it all is that I can enjoy pretty much any type of live music and this is my wife's favorite band which also makes it worthwhile.

Overall I think I enjoyed this concert more than the last because I only had to endure the New Kids, I didn't have to sit through 40 minutes of 98 degrees and their crappy ass music.

It appears as though I'm back on the right track with my weight management again.  Since discovering that I went back up over 230 I've inched my weigh closer to being under that target again.  As of this morning I am 230.6.

Speaking of which, the weight creeping up got me to get off my lazy ass and sync my Aria scale to my new wifi network and start attempting to use MyFitnessPal again.  It's difficult but I should hopefully be back into full routine by the end of this week and logging everything I put in my mouth (no comments).

The wife has inventory at work this week so by some weird fluke we have actually had the entire weekend off together.   Yesterday we went to see the new Planet of the Apes movie which wasn't too bad, though I guess I'll have to watch the first one to make full sense of it even though the summary of "We created a virus that killed most of the population and now Apes can talk and shoot machine guns" is probably more than I actually need.

I've also started playing Skrim again so that I can actually beat the game and get it out of my backlog.  I went into it telling myself that I was going to avoid doing most of the side missions and just focus on the Major Missions and the actual story line.  So far I'm only about 8 hours into it and I'm holding true to it.  When I complete a major mission or get close to one I'll look at my map and see if there are any side missions close by so that I can just knock them out without going out of my way.  So, it's better than before when I would just start going through all the side missions and forget about anything that advanced the story at all.  Games like this are too vast for my game playing OCD - I want to complete everything but too much stuff keeps popping up to do making it impossible.

Also - Dragons 1 - Sparky 2
One dragon bested me as I was only level 9 and my main damage dealing is with Fire Spells.  He was a fire dragon and thus immune to what I was trying to do.
The next one was a Frost Dragon and he also was trying to attack 2 giants, a mammoth and a Saber Cat at the same time so I killed him pretty easily.

I'm Also making a dent in my DC New 52 challenge where I want to "catch up" with all the comics since the Universe reboot.  I'm currently tackling the Lantern books and by the end of this week will be over half way done with them before moving onto something else.   I'm going to move on right after the Rise of the Third Army story line because that feels like a good place to break off and tackle a couple o the ones that were completed and cancelled before moving back to some of the ongoing ones.

For now I'm off to my wife's favorite pancake house with the family so we can enjoy a nice non-home-cooked breakfast together on this rare day off together.  After that I'm not sure where our fun will be headed. Thinking about buying the Lego Movie because it was amazing and I really want to watch it again.  We can put some popcorn on the old fashioned popper and pour our cokes into big glasses and pretend that we are in a theater living the high life.

Or, go on a murder rampage and hide the bodies - as long as I can be done in time to make my 5 am shift tomorrow.

The Hunt for Solar Flare and other nonsense

I remember back when F to da Boy was my favorite person to comment on this blog but as my poker posts went so did he.  My new favorite though is angerisagift and as such he gets a few silent shout outs.

Since my last post in which he commented that there was a new Mt Dew flavor I still have been unable to locate it.  I have, however, seen several past flavors come back to the shelves but I have been avoiding them. I only want new and improved or I'm sticking to the classic and true.

I'm currently about one month away from my year anniversary with my Fitbit and looking back at my numbers it all looks good except for the fact that I have put back on some weight recently.  It all started when I got a bit lazy after visiting some friends and then the holidays hit and Wedding planning then Honeymoon and now pregnancy.  By the way, I now fully understand and will never make fun of the whole hubby gaining weight during pregnancy thing.  I get it, it's real but I'm trying to combat it a bit.

With that in mind I'm really looking forward to reporting my first year totals and work on a plan to increase my daily activity to make the second year that much better.
Currently I'm over 4 million total steps taken and a little under 2 thousand miles walked.

I'm in the process of seriously debating with myself to change my phone and my carrier in order to save money.  At this point I'm pretty tired of shelling out $80+ per month for just my phone.  When you combine my wife's phone the numbers increase and it would be really nice to get both of our phones for that price or less.  So, I'm going to be experimenting for myself and then if everything works out well I'll convince the wife to join me as we save money for our future, for our family.

Work has been hell pretty much since the start of June but everything is about to get easier in the next few weeks and I'm really looking forward to that.  I should not only be full staffed but have extra staffing so that I can focus on doing my actual job better and work on training others to take my position after my head explodes.

The Fish got Skinned

Call it what you want, I am a fish in the grand scheme of this poker game.  My blog is aptly named.  I'm not the worst player but I'm not the type that would ever be able to actually make a living at this game either.  I am 100% good with that though because I've got a great wife at home, I have a job that pays the bills and I get to play poker when I have time, for fun, and always enjoy the game.

My last session ended with me being a fish after playing well for a few hours.

I built my stack up with a series of hands that started with a straight and ended up trips.  I'm getting close to the end of my session and I look down and see AK suited and that's when everything fell apart.

I raised and got re-raised and this is where the first mistake happened.  There were too many people in the pot for a re-raised pot by the time it got back to me and I realize that I don't have enough experience in these situations to actually play them well and yet I told myself that I will only continue post flop if the flop hits me hard so I called.
I wanted to put in another raise to narrow the field to just one or two players.  I wanted to put in another raise or fold but instead I took the least desirable path and just called the 3 bet.

The flop comes out AK6 and the first person to act puts $75 into a pot of about $150.  The A and K are both spades and the 6 is a diamond.  I think about it for a minute before calling, wanting to Jam any non-spade turn.  The next person to act makes it $300 and in my mind this SCREAMS 666.
I'm tired so the screaming is more of a faint whisper "that bitch has a set of 6's and you must fold."

The original bettor is thinking and thinking and thinking and during this thinking my mind got distracted and somehow I started putting the person who raised on a possible large ace or A6 that was suited, maybe even another AK just trying to chase away a flush draw.  My mind started going over all the scenarios of things she could have had that were not 666 and by the time this other person finally folded I forgot all about my original screams of concern.

If I had to make a decision in 10 seconds after her bet I would have folded and thought nothing about it but this other person taking so long to debate and make a decision let my mind wonder and then I got attached to my hand and top two and sort of let the obvious fall to the wayside.

So, there I was putting my money into the middle hoping for another A or K to fall because true to my instincts the other player turns over her pocket pair of 6's.

This is my first losing session since becoming a married man and it wasn't just a simple cooler that did it to me, it was my own stupidity, my own fishiness.  I know I should have folded and somehow I just couldn't make myself do it and my bankroll is several hundred dollars smaller because of it.

I guess the good news is that on my way to the poker room I won $5 at the craps table and on the way out I talked myself out of Tilt Playing Craps trying to make my poker money back at Dem Good Tables!!!

Don't Play Tired kids.  Pretty sure if my mental state was better I would have made this fold.
But, that's what fish do.  Fish get attached to their own hands and talk themselves into making calls because they are ahead.  Fish play tired and not in the right mindset.
Fish go home broke (most of the time).

May my next session be better!
Bankroll still around $1200

And in other news

If you'll all forgive my lack of a follow up with the actual ComicCon currently and instead indulge me in this probably brief little bitch session I'd truly appreciate it.

One phrase that I have heard a lot growing up is that being a step-parent is probably the hardest job there is.  I never fully realized it until I jumped in with both feet (and it is a decision I will NEVER regret).  Sometimes it's just a look you get or a comment thrown your way.

When you do what I did and become a step parent right around the Mid-Life Crisis point your entire world gets flipped upside down.  This is not a lame cliche, this is not the lament of someone who doesn't get it, this is the dog's honest truth of the situation.

I jumped into this relationship willingly, heart first.  I love my family and the bond that we have and am thankful for them every single day of my life.  However, this is my first go round with children.  I went from being single and having all of the freedoms that come with it to being a parent.  A lot of the normal relationship stuff is altered when one person has a child.  The relationship is formed with a complete lack of alone time.  The relationship is formed with always having other people in the mix. It's different, it's strange.

But, now I am subject to trying to play by a different set of rules and a lot of those rules are extremely foreign to me or unknown.  I'm constantly left wondering where my boundaries are, what I can or cannot do.  Is it OK for me to say this or is this something I need to keep my mouth shut on?  That's just at home, throw step grand-parents into the mix and things start to get more complicated.

Today was one of those days.
I was brought up differently than my child and (I assume) my step-siblings.  I have a different belief system of what is acceptable and what is not acceptable and today my words got me into an uncomfortable situation.

I left without bothering to defend myself as I know that it honestly doesn't matter.  I've found a new boundary that I cannot cross while I'm over there and I'll just have to remember it in the future.  But man, doesn't make me feel any less pissed off at this particular moment.

My next post will hopefully be about the lessons I have learned during my first trip to a ComicCon!
P.S. - the end to that USA vs Portugal game absolutely blew.

Las Vegas ComicCon - the Pre Post

Tomorrow is the last day of the Las Vegas ComiCon and the only day I'll be able to attend this year due to having to work late at work yesterday and today.  I already have my tickets bought and this morning I'm going through the lists of people who will be attending and going over my meager physical comic book collection trying to pick out some stuff to get autographed by the people who do the work I enjoy.

Sitting here trying to figure out if I want to get a second copy of that #1 issue autographed or if I want someone to autograph my favorite cover out of the series has me feeling like a giddy high school kid who just touched a boob for the first time.

Sure, some of this stuff is easy even if the artist is a douche and charges extra to autograph certain issues just because those issues are worth more and he can get away with it.

Yes, I'm looking at you Rob Liefeld.

Last year one of my friends went and got a few things signed for me and they told me they waited in line for Liefeld and by the time they got up there they learned that he was charging extra for New Mutants #98 and a couple of others.  Oh Deadpool how ye hath cost me so much money over the years. You and your bloody popularity and your 3 million variant covers and your whoring your ass out to every bloody variant cover for comics you don't even appear in.  I will never complete your collection but I'll gobble up the cheap shit as I can!

So this year has a lot of Deadpool people and a few of them I'll have to miss out on because I don't own anything they did.  One guy did a Kid Deadpool one shot but I never got my grubby hands on it.
However, I'm hitting up the Creator and two others which makes me all happy in the pants.

In addition to Liefeld, Gerry Duggan is going to be in attendance and he is one of the guys responsible for the entire run (ongoing) of the Marvel Now Deadpool series which I absolutely love.  Last year my friend got an autograph for me on the Baby Cover variant of Issue Number one and this year I'm trying to figure out a couple of other issues to get signed.  I'll probably get another Variant cover signed and then pick one or two of my other favorite issues or covers from there.  As from the pic above I'm totally going with the Wedding Issue as the cover is now in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the most characters on a comic book cover, like in the history of EVER.

Next up is Charles Soule who took a book with a great premise but whorable delivery and turned it into something worth reading, the Marvel Now Thunderbolts.  Honestly the only reason I even got into this book in the first place was because of the inclusion of Deadpool and he is the only reason I stuck with it.  The book floundered through the first part of the run and then Soule took over and it became one of my favorite books to look forward to.  I was very disheartened when it was announced that starting with issue #27 another creative team was taking over.  However, I have found a writer I like and am now looking for other things he is doing so I guess all's well that ends well.  I think I'm going to take the 1st issue he was part of and the last issue as well (even though I kinda hated the ending) so that I can have the bookends of his Thunderbolts run.

Then there is some minor stuff that I've found I can get signed by various people as well.  The guy who colors Wolverine: Origin II is going to be there and I ended up picking up a Variant Cover for the 1st issue with Deadpool (of course) on it.  Haven't bothered to read it yet but whatever.

One of the artists doing the new Harley Quinn series will be there so I'm bringing issue #0 (with 17 artists, and I hope to get them all before I perish) and #1 along.  And a guy involved with The Chew (comic, not that show on TV) will be there and I have a partial issue of that which was attached to Revival which I have been getting.    That pretty much rounds it out for me.  I'm going to also try to hit up the Liefeld panel when he speaks at noon and hope my boy doesn't get too bored with it.  Well, just generally hoping he doesn't get too bored with the whole thing but there should be enough awesome stuff to look at that he should maintain a bit of excitement most of the time.  Now to prepare myself for "Dad, can we buy this, can we buy that, can we can we can we Oh I'm hungry and I want you to buy me that over priced whatever right here then let me touch your new shiny autographed comic books with my disgusting dirty greasy ketchup covered hands oh I'm sorry it will wipe off I didn't mean to smear it good thing you didn't pay for it oh right you kind of just did but hey it's the memories that count right dad?"

Building a Bankroll at Bally's

I'm still in the process of trying to think of a label to attach to all of my new, post marriage poker posts so that I can link them all to the side and people who just want to read about the local fish at the tables can just go to them immediately.  Until it hits me I'll probably put something generic in there as a "just because."
You won't realize this but I came back to this spot after finishing the rest of the post and just decided that I was going to stick it under "Bankroll Challenge" which is already on the side from a previous time I started to try to build a roll but gave up due to ....uh.... I have no bloody idea why.   So, Let the new Bankroll Challenge begin.  Lets tear this mother up!

Before work yesterday I mentioned to my lovely wife that I'd like to go play poker in the evening since she worked early and I had to work late.  The other factor is that she didn't have to work tomorrow so me coming home late and waking her up wouldn't be as big of a sin, especially if I happened to bring home bad news of blowing $850 in poker and the rest on a hooker who kisses on the lips.  I let her know that I'd give her a call after I got out of work and if she didn't answer I would assume she was sleeping and go play poker for a few hours and underneath her sarcasm she was OK with it.

So after work I hoped into my car and made that phone call and much to my dismay after about 3 or 4 rings she answered the phone.  I asked her if she wanted me to bring anything home and she said that she knew I wanted to play poker so I should just go out and play for a little bit.  I headed home to drop off my lunch bag, get my Players Cards and kiss my wife goodnight.  Before I left the door she told me to win her lots of money, then I drove to my old standby, Bally's.

I love playing at Bally's.  Bally's has by far my favorite set of dealers who remember me even if I haven't been there in over a year.  They recognize me, chat with me and last night one even looked at me and said "oh you finally got married, congratulations" and then we proceeded to talk about it for a bit while she didn't deal me any winners.  Bally's has also been host to some of my bigger wins and even though they don't have games like they used to (I think Planet Hollywood stole those games) I still cannot help but make this the place that I head to 80% of the time when I go out.

Last night there were 4 All In games running when I got there and one limit game.  I only waited around for maybe 3 minutes before being seated and while playing at my first table I got to experience the fun of the river.  There was at least a series of 7 hands in a row that were all won on the river where the money was in the middle before that last dreaded card appeared and I was involved in 3 of them.

The first of three had me making a raise with KJ pre-flop and getting about 3 people to come along to the flop.  The flop was KKx and I lead out getting one hesitant caller.  The turn was a 2.  I bet, got raised and pushed the rest of my money in.  The "gentleman" turns over K2 and I turn up KJ just in time to watch a Jack hit the river so the pot could be pushed to the good guys.

A couple of hands later I had Pocket Tens and called a raise. The flop comes out 8 high and I lead out which gets a caller. The turn is a safe card and I get a short stack all in only to watch the river flush so his 93 of hearts takes all of those precious chips and puts them in front of the wrong guy.

Two hands later I get the dreaded pocket kings (which Rob Assures me I played wrong and should have folded pre-flop) ((I just made that last bit up)).
Anyway, Guy UTG raises to $12 and gets a caller, I re-raise to $40 with two ugly kings, folds to original raiser who pushes and then back to me with the obvious call.
He turns over AQ of spades after I turn up my Kings.  The flop has 2 spades and I tell him that the river has been really kind lately and as he is getting ready to leave (already grabbed all his stuff and pushing his chair in) a 3rd spade hits the river and the dealer had to point out to him that he actually did win the hand.

So, 3 hands played and 3 rivers being the deciding factor.  I got to watch my stack double up and then go back to short again.

A bit later the table broke and I kept playing for a little while.
I'm in late position and raise pocket Jacks to $12 and get 2 callers.  Flop comes out Axx with 2 to a flush on it and the first guy to act bets $10 into me.  I'd seen him do this several times but never saw a hand so I'm not sure at this point if he didn't have much, was trying to get me to raise, was trying to chase his flush cheap or if he just didn't know anything about bet sizing.
I think about it and call so that I can "one time" him due to his poor bet sizing choice.  We are the only two to the turn.
The Turn is a Jack giving me a set and keeping the flush away.  He leads out for 20 and I make 70, he calls.
River is a blank and he bets, I push and he calls with AK.  As he turned his cards over he said "Ok, send me home for the night" and I replied (as I was flipping) "Your wish is my command sir."

The two guys to my left started complaining that I just sent the biggest calling station home for the night, but we had a good time talking despite my rudeness.

Shortly later I packed up for the evening with a profit of $100 bringing my total bankroll to somewhere over $1400 (if I remove my seed money, if not I'm around $1900 instead).

And - Finally a head Scratcher.

At my first table I wasn't paying attention too much during this hand due to trying to get me a Blue Moon.
There was no raise pre-flop and by the time the river showed up the pot was only maybe $30 bucks or so.
The Board was KAKxx with the KAK on the flop (obviously).

First guy to act checked, second guy bets $10, First guy check raises to $20, Second guy CALLS!

Second guy is the first to show and he flips over AK for the flopped boat and inside my head I'm screaming "HOW THE HELL DID YOU NOT RAISE OR PUSH OR SOMETHING - WHERE IS YOUR POT?"

The first guy flips over AA for the flopped TOP BOAT and my head explodes.
My nose starts to run and my ears start bleeding.
Three fingernails fell off and hit the felt.  I picked them up and munched on them like they were potato chips as small particles of my melting brain settled into the bottom of my skull like a bowl of cold soup.
I stared at the bored and their cards trying to find any rational explanation as to how there was no real money in the pot when they both flopped boats, STRONG boats and both were 2+ buy-ins deep and neither felt like actually putting money in the pot.

Guy number one remarks "Man, I thought you had Pocket Kings that whole time and didn't want to invest too much" and that's when my heart exploded and I pissed myself.

Lead me not into Robvegaspokers Temptation

Since I have been married I have gone out and played poker exactly twice.  During these two sessions it is pretty safe to say that I'm riding a hot streak.  That is a huge plus because I really didn't have any type of bankroll to speak of and a hot streak lets me keep playing occasionally.

The second session started out with me deciding to take a trip down to Bally's for the evening and upon arriving I noticed that they had 3 tables going.  Two of them the All In variety and one of them the slow bleeding death and the smell of rotting corpses variety.  I put myself on the wait list for the former, of course. The problem was that the list was about 6 people deep, nobody really wanted to bust out or go home and Bally's wasn't particularly interested in opening another table at the time.  This lead me to taking a walk over to Planet Hollywood where my Bravo poker app told me they had 7 All In games running.

The walk was pretty crowded as foot traffic is increased because of that sweet sweet World Series of Poker action.  About a minute into my walk I hear someone saying "Psst, hey." "Hey You."

I assumed that this was directed elsewhere and kept walking.  However, thirty seconds later I hear "Hey you, yeah you" and I look over because curiosity killed the cat and all that nonsense right?

As I look over I get a smile and a "So, what are you doing tonight?" To which I respond that I'm just going to meet some friends.
She replies "Well, maybe your friends should meet my friends and we can all have a good time."

This is the part where the new grrouch took over and shut out the old grrouch part of his brain.
Instead of inquiring about what a good time would entail.  Instead of continuing the conversation to see where it might lead and then giving the rejection in the end.  Instead of a myriad of different things I could have said or done in order to get a much better story for this blog post....

"Yeah, no.  My friends and I don't like to have fun."

No more words were spoken between us, but I did manage to slow down so that I could get a few "from behind" shots of my would be assailant. Getting any frontal shots would have been too much risk.

As for the poker portion of my tale, it was mostly uneventful.  For most of the nearly 3 hours I was there I ran pretty card dead and when I had something playable I missed.  My stack fluctuated but I won or stole enough hands to keep me in the game.
I moved seats near the end of my session because I didn't want to sit next to the guy who just came to our table with $600 and tried to rat-hole down to the regular buy-in.
At my new seat I won a couple decent hands and then the last playable hand I had (and the last hand I played oddly enough) was this.

I raised to $7 with J9 of spades and got 7 callers.
Flop came out TT7 with two Diamonds.  This ended up getting checked around.
The turn was a non diamond 8 and I bet out $65 getting 2 callers.
The River was the ugliest 7 I have ever seen and I checked, but oddly enough so did everyone else.
I turned over my straight and one guy mucked.  Another guy pretty much cursed himself out and then threw his cards in eventually.  I'm guessing busted flushes with the last guy kicking himself for not trying to steal it on the river scare card.
Either way, I cashed out up over a buy-in on a night where I didn't have anything going for me until right near the end.

I will never get tired of this view
I wasn't willing to part with whatever donation they were looking for in order to get a better, focused, pic with the girls so I just stood back and waited for them to not pay attention and snapped a series of out of focus pics where this was the best of what I had.  Whatever.

New grrouch. Married grrouch.  Took the safe route with the hooker and then took the safe route with the hot bikini cops as well.
Married life has turned me lame!
