So Today is the start of the NFL Season and at 6:30 the game is going to kick off and where will I be?
At my boy's soccer practice watching a bunch of pre-teens practice and try to get better at a sport they love instead of watching the one I love.
However, all is not lost as I do have a Verizon phone and it appears as though I can pay $5/month to stream Thursday Night, Sunday Night and Monday Night games plus whatever bullshit local games get played on Sundays (read Raiders and Cardinals mostly).
I had debated going with NFL Rewind so that I could watch the games after they happened but knowing myself I would probably not use it enough to make it worth whatever I paid for it. So, $5 to watch the game tonight is reasonable to a baller like me.
This year I am setting aside some of those amazing poker winnings that I have had recently so that I can bet one parlay card every week through the season. I figure $20 per week is reasonable enough that it won't make or break me.
I'm also going to copy Coach and put my predictions out there and keep track of what my record is every week to see how bad my prognostication abilities are. I just used a big word on purpose, I feel like Punxsutawney Phil.
I'll get to the weekend picks in another post but I figure that I should at least put up tonight's pick so that everyone doesn't think I cheated just to get one right.
Greenbay vs Seattle
Seattle's Defense is going to be key here and it will not come down to a last second Hail Mary like a previous encounter.
Seattle will win but I am not predicting scores.
Either tomorrow or Saturday after work I will head to one of the 3 million local sports books out here and book my parlay card for the week - I don't know which one I'll go to but I really don't think it matters all that much (unless one of you convinces me otherwise).

The woes of A Pittsburgh Steelers Fan
2003 was the last time the Steelers had a losing season. It's been a while.
Before that it was 1999. We have been good for over a decade. We have been consistent. This year is very painful to watch. I'm hoping it's a one year abirition but it sure doesn't feel like it.
Last season was 8-8 and this season I suspect we'll get bout 6, maybe 7 wins but I do feel it's going to be below .500.
We do have some tools in place but without an offensive line it's getting harder and harder to win games. Drafting two guys in the 1st two rounds last year was supposed to sure us up along with Pouncey, but injuries have decimated us once again and we are left playing people like Guy Whimper and whoever that center is that was rejected during the season and released.
Bell seems like eventually he could be good, but when you get excited about a guy carrying it 20+ times and still not reaching 100 yards - is there really anything worth getting excited about?
Jarvis Jones is going to be an impact player as soon as he figures out how to play in the NFL. He looks like a rookie at times. Worilds has not developed into the guy they thought he would and is only a fill in until Jones is ready to go or until we stop getting injuries (as I write this Woodley was injured again and didn't finish the game against Buffalo).
The secondary looks awful this year. Ike Taylor appears to have lost a step and Clark/Polamalou just don't appear to have the same chemistry as before. When you are forced to start either Allen or Gay (who we got rid of previously because he was awful) in the corner position you know there are issues.
There is no pass rush and the Defensive Line doesn't appear to know how to fill the gaps to stop the run. Heyward is no Aaron Smith and Ziggy Hood only made a good relief guy.
We have Big Ben and a great receiving core in Brown, Sanders, Cotchery and Miller but without time to protect the QB and without a running game that actually puts fear into the defense it's hard to rely on that. This is why we are forced to settle for so many field goals when we reach the red-zone.
Oh, it's a painful year to be a Steelers fan but it could be worse.
Some teams go through this every year and not once or twice a decade.

A day of rest?
This is completely weird and I'm not sure how to handle it. This is a very rare Sunday in which I have off but the Fiance is working most of the day leaving me to do whatever it is I actually feel like doing.
I could play video games all day or I could watch football all day. I've got decisions to make and my brain is at a loss :)
What I do know is that I have a strat game scheduled for 11 am this morning but after that is over then it's FREEDOM!
Speaking of strat - I've really been debating just quitting the league and the game. My free time is so little right now between work and spending what free time I have with the family. Not living with them I really hate to schedule something else in a time slot when I could be spending time with them instead. Even if it's just 1-3 hours it really does cut into the limited time I already have with them each and every week.
So, maybe it's time for one of my hobbies to bite the dust and just be done with it? I'll keep thinking on that and get back to myself later.
I just finished my Day 3 Morning Plank and I'm happy with where I am at thus far. I feel I'm going to get a lot further in this challenge than I expected and that's pretty cool. Sometimes you don't know what you can do until you push yourself to try I guess. We will see how I feel on day 10 and 15 when the times actually start getting difficult.
Last night before passing out I caught up on Deadpool Kills Deadpool and out of the 3 little mini-series in this vein this probably was my least favorite. Everything felt too rushed and there wasn't enough action. I really feel this is one of those instances where the scope should have been cut down or they should have drawn it out to 8 issues. Of course there is either another mini-series coming out of it or there is a 1-shot coming in January "Night of the Living Deadpool."
Also, because my comic book shop finally got Infinity Volume 2 in I am now able to start reading that series. Of course, I'm just going to go through and read the main one at this time and when I can find a torrent to download that has the entire collection including all off the tie-ins (like with Avengers vs X-Men) I'll go through and read the entire work of art and judge it on a whole. But, I do love me some Thanos.
Since I'm on Comic books I realize I need to cut down on what I'm buying (not reading). It's getting time to do some soul searching and just settle on a few titles that I want to have in my collection and the rest I can get digitally. It is a little painful but we will see what I can come up with.
The biggest problem is that there are so many good ones out there right now and a lot of little series I like to pick up. For Instance Infinity (even though I don't pull a single Avengers book) and Robocop and the new one from Max Brooks that is costing me way more than any other comic due to me collecting a more limited version of it (that one, however, is being fully funded by this blog so I'm hoping the funds don't run out before the issues do).
So, back on topic. Day free, strat game at 11.
After that (depending on what the 1st set of games are) I'll probably go pick up my boy and bring him back here so he can complain that football is still on while wanting me to play video games with him and watch Ridiculousness on my tablet. It's such a shame that these new additions to my family are not into football but I guess you take the good with the bad.

Dear Cleveland
Dear Cleveland,
How did it feel to watch the former Cleveland Browns claim their second Super Bowl Title?
It's gotta hurt especially since you guys never actually got one and I know y'all still bitter over that whole Art Modell thing.
Oh well.
Better luck next decade.

Over-Indulgence Sunday
Yesterday was the big game. Pretty much all y'all who read this follow the sport in some sort of manner so I don't need to talk down to you and give a big prologue of information just to describe why the words Super and Bowl have been pieced together to create some sort of gambling spectacular.
I think I've decided that unless the Steelers are in said game that I'll just consider it a major gambling holiday from here on out. I love all things football and haven't missed a game since I've been old enough to remember watching them but I just don't get into the "watching it at home with friends" thing the way I used to. Maybe it's because I'm older and the older I get the less friends come over for it. Work gets in the way of some people showing up (damn you non Monday - Friday jobs) and the reality is I could be doing things like trying to make money at a poker table while semi paying attention to the game and making jokes about both teams and the players.
I watched less of the game last year but I had more fun. Next year I will reconsider my options and go from there, but if the Steelers are not playing in it then you can expect to find me in one of the big shiny buildings on the strip bitching about bad beats!
If you turned the Super Bowl on during the last 5-8 minutes you would have witnessed what looked like a great competitive game that went down to the wire (again). However, you would have been fooled because the other 52 (give or take) minutes were not competitive and then there was the really horrible two half time shows that took place.
Baltimore dominated the 1st portion of the game and then after the 2nd halftime show the 9ers dominated until the score was close at which point Baltimore started to play again.
I ordered a lot of wings yesterday and I ate a lot. Then I snacked until I was bloated and I had a good time.
I started the day at 242.4 which was lower than where I was the previous week. Down about another pound, getting closer and closer that next goal. By the end of February I hope to be looking at numbers in the 230's occasionally so that I can finally hit and break that 60 pound barrier. That will be exciting shit right there.
By the end of this week I'll be going Pant shopping. It's about time that I've done this as I've dropped 2 sizes during this whole weight loss craze that it's starting to be uncomfortable to wear my current over-sized pants with belt. There is just too much material. So, I'll start the transition into my next size and spend more money than I want doing it.
At the risk of this getting too long I'm inching closer to my Debt Free status. I'll provide a bigger update later on that though.
Tax refund hit, I paid something off and should (hopefully) be paying something else off this week (probably on pay day because I don't feel like moving money from one bank account to another just to make the payment). That will leave me just a school loan and I'm waiting to hear about whether or not I've bonus'd at work or not to know the time frame to paying off that last piece. (I don't consider the house to be part of this Debt Free process right now - it's in its own special category).
Hooray for boobs!

A Monday Ramble
Today's ramble is brought to you by Hobbitses everywhere. Filthy, Dirty, Lying, Thieving Hobbitses.
I've got no real clue where this is headed but I know I haven't written in a minute (where did this phrase originate and why the hell am I using it now?).
Lets kick it off with Weight Loss
Over the last while my weight has been pretty stagnant, or so it seemed. I've been bouncing back and forth between 254 and 248 on a daily basis with me never being able to actually take that step to push through and stay consistently below the 250 mark. It was about 2 weeks ago that I finally hit 249 but the next day I was back to 251 or whatever. So, with some happiness I'm here to say that it looks like I've finally gotten through that hurdle and am below 250. For the past 5 or so days every time I have weighed myself I've been below and not above. Now it's time to start making a push for 245! When I fired up my Weight Watchers online tool and plugged in today's weight I was greeted with a graphic that showed me I have lost 8.2 pounds over the course of the last 3 months. So, while I say I've been stagnant the reality of the situation is that I'm still losing and it's just slower than I'd like, than I'm used to. I guess the fact that when I first started out on this journey and I was shedding pounds like crazy without much effort that I became a bit spoiled and when the weight loss slows to more normal levels I just fail to realize it's still happening. However, that little graphic that shows me down 8.2 over the 3 month period is proof and BLAMMO I just gotta keep pushing.
This has been true for a number of weeks now but the Pittsburgh Steelers control their own destiny. We, however, are not playing like a playoff team and even if we win out and get in it does not appear that we have what it takes to compete with the top 3 of the conference (Patriots, Texans, Broncos). This is kind of an annoying statement to actually type because we have been so good for so long but we are back to playing Steelers football which means we can compete with the big boys but we are constantly getting disappointed by the teams we should be beating no matter what. We had a 3 game stretch without our QB and we had a HUGE opportunity to seize the division even without him. Our Defense was playing lights out but our offense and special teams hindered us. First meeting against the Ravens we played well enough to win but we allowed a huge Punt Return Touchdown that sealed our fate. Against the Browns our defense dominated enough to win the game but when the offense turns the ball over 8 times there is no coming back from that. Then we actually beat the Ravens without our QB and things were looking up. However, coming back from injury and a sputtering offense failed to do anything against the Chargers and constantly giving them the ball on our side of the 50 proved to be detrimental. Now a loss to the Cowboys and for the first time we are actually looking in from the outside. We can, however, still sneak into the playoffs if we can win out. Most important game is next week against the Bengals because if we beat them we will have the same record but we will have the tiebreakers against them - giving us the last wild card spot. This is good news but the problem is we have to put it together. By my counts we have won one game out of our last 5 and now we have to win the next 6 straight to be crowned Super Bowl Champions. Tall task ahead of us for a team that is not playing like a championship team on both sides of the ball.
By the way - Tony Romo was the 1st QB all season to throw for over 300 yards against our Defense. Amazing.
I finally went out and saw The Hobbit last night and I'm quite happy with the movie. It's nice to watch a movie set in this universe with a not-so-serious tone as the Lord of the Rings movies. The movie didn't feel like it was as long as it actually was, it had great humor and a lot of nice action. I have not read the books so I don't know if the books had as many one liners as the movie had or if that was all added in after the fact. However, it wasn't overly campy that I was taken out of the experience but I did take notice when it just felt like a line shouldn't have been there (the Golf joke, the frying pan/fire joke, Gandalf slicing a guy who then stands in front of him like nothing happened until Gandalf gently nudges his head off with his staff....). Overall I loved the movie and I will be seeing it again.
Once I get a more favorable schedule I'll have to find time to take the old man to see the movie because he's been in love with The Hobbit long before any of the Lord of the Rings movies ever came out. I remember tales from my childhood where he talked about The Hobbit being one of the few (maybe the only) books he ever really read and loved.
The biggest gripe is going to be the fact that I've got to wait another 2 years to finish my tale as The Hobbit is going to be it's own separate trilogy.
LOTR was a big epic book divided into 3 movies. The Hobbit was a much smaller work divided into 3 movies as well. Next thing we know Peter Jackson is going to make 3 movies out of an extra 100 pages that was "discovered" while sifting through J.R.R. Tolkien's unfinished works, but it will be about an alternate ending where Frodo decided to give the One Ring back to Gollum.
I've started working out my goals for the new year and I really want to share them, however I'm still a couple of weeks too early for that crap so I've just got this list rambling through my head with no real rhyme or reason currently. It's like I have some extra voices in my head who want to find a home, a home on my blog, but they are all lost because I refuse to type them out. One is holding a sign saying "will joke for food."
I've been slacking off with my writing/blogging lately but I'd like to get to a point where I can churn out more quality over quantity. Now that I'm no longer at a point in my life where the blog is acting as anti-depression medication I don't feel the urge to sit down and write every single day like before. However, I think part of my absence this month is because of that damned Outlook catastrophe and I'm still in mourning for the loss of what I considered a great, well thought out and analytic post about a corporate entity who has parents by the balls :)
Has anyone else seen the Hobbit?
What did you think about it?
How are we feeling football wise? Is Dallas going to sneak in? (I know I've got some Cowboy fans reading this)? Is Washington going to take that division behind TWO Rookie QBs?
Does anyone want to face Seattle right now or is this overblown because of their opponents the last couple of weeks?
Does this blog make my ass look fat?

Does this blog make my ass look fat?

Donte Stallworth
Just find this amusing.
Patriots, short on WR's, end up signing Donte Stallworth who hasn't really been a factor anywhere for a while I think.
His first game suited up he catches a 63 yard TD strike from Tom Brady.
He hurts himself on that play with a High Ankle Sprain and today was placed on the Injured Reserve list.
Pats resign Dion Branch for like the 3rd or 4th time this season alone.
Stallworth could have been a good story for the rest of the year but instead he's an asterisk.

It's NOT the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
I don't care what the commercials say, blast, blare, constantly beat into our zombie like heads. This time of the year sucks. It's a horrible, horrible time of the year. It's the most degenerate time of the year.
This is the time of the year where, if you didn't prepare properly, you can go broke before you get a chance to have your morning Diet Mt Dew. This is a wallet draining, agonizing experience year after year after year.
Normally I suffer from Seasonal Depression and as such I hate the holidays.
This has been the first holiday season in countless years where I haven't felt myself going through it. Sure, there is a twinge of it here and there but this has been a mostly depression free season for me and for that I am thankful.
I attribute this to a number of factors.1 - Having some stability in my life.
2 - Having my family close by.
3 - New relationship excitement
4 - I'm just that damned awesome yo
On to other things.
Yesterday in Football Sucked!
Royally, horribly, painfully sucked.
The Steelers played bad and looked worse. We had some big mistakes that really cost us in the long run of the game. Antonio Brown trying to pick up a fumble in the endzone and then just allowing the Chargers to fall on it for an easy TD. A couple of big dropped bombs from Wallace and Brown, all that could have sustained drives and turned into points but instead forced punts which lead to very short field position for the Chargers.
The Chargers won the battle of field position all game long and as a result they won the game. Our defense played a hell of a game (expect that one 9 minute drive really) but you cannot expect a Defense to be on the field for as long as they were and not have a few breakdowns. It was the Offense that didn't hold up it's end of the bargain and for once it was not the fault of the returning from an injury QB who actually looked pretty good overall.
The good news is that the Ravens dropped their second in a row and the Bengals caved at the last minute the the Cowboys. A win here would have been amazing for the Steelers but at least we didn't lose ground and allow Cincy to sneak ahead of us for the last playoff spot that we are desperately clinging too.
I already bitched yesterday about how MOJO knows the secret to the universe and calmly put his money on Seattle this week to quite possibly lock up the winners spot barring any random mental breakdown in the last few weeks of the season.
I've been trying to call the utility company today to pay a bill but I keep getting "Service unavailable" today. Kinda funny how much we rely on cell phones and don't know what to do the moment something goes wrong. Whatever - there is always tomorrow.
I started reading Action Comics from the New 52 and I'm going to admit that I think I just find Superman to be boring. Nothing about the 1st 6 or so issues thus far has really grabbed me and compelled me to keep going. However, recently, I have read through I, Vampire and the new TMNT comics and absolutely love them. Easton Calling Games is Good for the NFL
Anyone that follows the NFL this year knows about the whole
saga of replacement referees.
Fortunately that mess has been cleared up and we have the proper zebras
back calling the games.
I wonder what will happen to Shannon Easton now that the
refs have been calling games again. For
those of you that are just straight football fans, that was the woman that was
a replacement referee. Those of you that
follow poker know her as the female ref who was getting in trouble due to her
past as a "pro poker player."
The NFL's antiquated policy against gambling nearly cost Easton her job before she
ever got a chance. For those of you that
aren't familiar with the policy, if you are in the NFL or work for the NFL in
any capacity, you are not allowed to gamble. Their policy is so extreme that they snubbeda poker charity event in Las Vegas because it was held at the Golden
Nugget.
Fortunately the league realized that Easton was not a threat to fix games and let
her call games while the referees were on strike. She was the first woman in league history to
officiate the game and officially broke the gender barrier in the game, at
least where officials are concerned.
The question now remains whether or not Easton will get to officiate games in the
future or if this will be a one-time thing that only came about as a result of
the referee strike. If that is the case,
it would be a shame.
However, they do have the ability to call games the same as
any male. It would be great to see Easton return to the
field as an official next year with a full time gig instead of a replacement
gig. Just as women are "good for
poker", Easton
would be "good for the NFL."

grrouch here - the Above was written by one of my silent readers who recently contacted me about making a guest post touching both on Football and Poker and I figure'd that it seemed like a great idea.
The information above is info that I actually knew nothing of because I was too busy living my own life and ignoring what goes on around me but is great knowledge to have.

Everything and Nothing
Well, I'd first like to start by welcoming myself back to the land of the internet.
I've had a lot going on over the course of the last week or so and I'm happy to report that pretty much all of it is good.
First things first and that is my vacation officially ends on Wednesday when I have to go back to work. So, I've still got two more days to enjoy that.
I also officially turned in the keys to the apartment today and will get to write that chapter of my life off when I pay the water bill (tomorrow).
I also will be paying my last storage bill tomorrow as well (hopefully tomorrow) as I have emptied the thing out and never want to see it again.
Sticking on the topic of things I need to cancel: FreeCreditReport.com, WeightWatchers.com and.... I know there is a 3rd one but not sure what it is off hand. I'm going to have to look at my recurring bills from the past few months and finger that one out.
While everything I own is in the house, there is still a lot of cleaning and sorting that needs to be done. Slowly but surely it is all getting done but it would be nice if the unpacking fairy would work her magic while I sleep tonight.
I weighed myself this morning and I was 261.2 which is pretty good. I've eaten like a pig and drank like a fish this past week and am pretty surprised to have not gained back 8-10 pounds.
Places I have eaten over the past week that I can remember:
McDonalds, Jack-in-the-Box, Hash House A Go-Go, Buffalo Wild Wings, Billy Bob's Steak House, Pasta Palace and a few others. None of these meals have been particularly small either.
As for the drinking - Good thing that I'm starting to keep track Oct 1st and not prior. Went to BJ's booze shack (or something) and had 4 very tasty adult beverages. Had another 4 at Buffalo Wild Wings. Had 7 last night at Bills Gambling Hall (Blue Moons), had 2 tonight watching football at Aliante and then there have been others scattered in there as well.
Overall it's been quite an enjoyable vacation and I'm sad to see it go, but all good things must come to an end. The fact that I still lost weight during this time span is impressive and I hope to dip below 260 by the end of this coming week.
Finally beat Gears of War 3 but that was 2 days ago and before October hit so it won't count towards my goals for Oct. However, with friends, I have been having quite a good time actually playing games again.
Starting in the morning I'll be focusing on my goals and making sure I achieve all of them. I've already been thinking of new goals for upcoming months but I generally forget all about it 10 minutes later which means they were not particularly good goals.
After a very fun session at Bills Gambling Hall at the 50 cent One Dollar game I have decided where I want to take my bankroll challenge (which has thus far been abandoned). However, first thing is that I need to save up the money.
Good thing I got that promotion in order to help me get to my "bankroll" quicker so that I can start it up.
I'm not sure If I'll bother to do it at all this year or if I'll start off 2013 fresh and attempting it.
What I do know is that I'm sleepy and about to hit the sack.
I drop my buddy off at the airport tomorrow and his plane leaves at 11 pm so on Tuesday I do plan on a bit of cleaning and organizing and hopefully a real blog post with some sort of substance.
Should I keep random running tally's on where I stand for my challenges or just let it be a total and utter surprise come the end of the month to see if I have done anything at all or if I've actually managed to do what I set out to do?

Betting on the Pigskin - Week 3
The time has come once again for me to sit down and type out some predictions for everyone to marvel over. Last week there was not a whole lot of marveling as my predictions were pretty much crap, but alas I'm new at this game and much like my rugged handsome features my sports betting prognostication will get better with time.
I've changed my sports-book of choice to look up my NFL betting odds this time around because I feel that maybe a change of scenery will help my predictions. Paddypower currently does not take wagers from U.S. citizens currently (though they are looking to change that in the future) so unless you are on the other side of the pond please do not have any wild dreams about jumping on board and placing the wagers that I am putting forth here. Currently, I can only bring fame, riches and glory to those outside of the United States!!!
The NY Giants are +2.5 vs Carolina which I think is a fabulous bet to take as I feel the Giants are going to win this game.
Buffalo is currently listed at -3 vs Cleveland and I pretty much feel that betting against Cleveland every week is a guaranteed way to make money.
The Bengals are listed at +3 vs the Redskins which I think is also a fantastic pick. RG3 is a great player but their defense just lost it's best player and another guy who anchored their line. The Red Bomber and AJ Green are going to have an easier time without Orakpo in Daltons face every single play.
Detroit Lions are -3.5 vs the Titans and I think you'd be stupid NOT to bet this game. From what I understand CJ2k was recently questioned on his whereabouts for the two Titan murders that were committed the past two Sundays.
49ers -6.5 vs Minnesota I think is another good one as the 9ers D is good enough to shut down All Day AP especially since the Vikings do not have a passing game.
Greenbay -3 vs Seattle - Even though I think Seattle will play the Packers tough, I still think Green Bay wins by 10 points. Seattle is an up and coming team but Russel Wilson is going to feel the wrath of Clay Matthews to the tune of another 3 sacks.
Those are my 6 picks and I'm really liking the way they look. This week there are a lot of tough match-ups and games that could go either way. The NFL has a lot of parity currently with only a couple teams that really stand out among the rest and a couple that are well below the rest.
So, here's to hoping with my new found online sports book and their NFL betting odds will propel me to greatness!
Last week I finished 2-4 on my predictions and this week I'd really be happy with a 4-2 finish to get me to .500 on the season.

Sunday Night Update
I've been learning over the past few months that if you start with the bad, the dirty, the awful or whatever else and end with something positive nothing seems that bad in the end.
So, without blah blah blah.
Sports Betting:
I start out sucking which really proves to me that I shouldn't be putting real money on games.
So, some positive with my negative I guess.
Pats vs Cards - 48.5 OVER - Actual 38 points..... 0-1
Vikings vs Colts - 45.5 UNDER - Actual 43 points ... 1-1
Saints -2.5 vs Panthers - Panthers won - 1-2
Cowboys -3 vs Seahakws - Seahawks won - 1-3
49ers -7 vs Lions .... Lions lost by 8.... 1-4
Chargers -6.5 vs Titans.... Chargers Covered ... 2-4
Total 2-4 and would have definitely lost money this week! Score one for being a tight-ass with my money and refusing to sports bet!
Football:
Steelers won and looked very dominant after the 1st quarter.
Ravens Lost and that's always good.
Strat - Scumdogs:
Antonio Brown had 7 receptions.
C.J. Spiller ran wild again averaging over 8 yards per carry in the game and over 10 for the season thus far!
Push-Ups:
I set out a goal of doing 50 today and decided upon doing random sets of 10 throughout the day.
For my morning shift I did 3 sets of 10. In the afternoon I did 2 sets of 10 and felt myself wearing down.
In the evening I did another 2 sets and finished at 70 push-ups for the day!!!
I'm hoping to do 100 next Sunday as my stretch goal. I want to try for one more set for the night but I don't want to push it too hard so I'm ending at 70!
For the rest of this week I'm going to keep doing sets of 10 and then next week I'll up to to 11 or 12 or whatever I feel comfortable with. Either way, I'm getting in some exercise and muscle building as well so this has to be a win-win for the fat man right?

Weight Loss - Day 98 - Plus some
Almost 100 days and still showing some minor progress and, more importantly, no regress.
The only fight of the evening that was a disappointment was the final fight, Canelo vs Lopez and that is only because I haven't been a boxing fan in years and know nothing about any of the fighters.
Yesterday I weighed myself because I knew it was going to be a rough night full of pizza and pasta go to with the Boxing Matches. However, I did not overdo it which I'm pretty happy about.
Today I came in at 265.
5 more pounds to go to hit that all elusive 260 number. Taking it one day at a time and one salad at at time.
I haven't updated on the push-ups but I'm still getting some in almost daily. I found that with some stress that is going on in my life I think killing myself with the push-ups like I was ended up just adding a ton of tension into my neck/shoulder muscles which at one point caused a 3 day headache. So, I've backed off on killing myself just trying to get as many as possible and instead of just cut back to doing a few sets per day to keep up with some sort of exercise and to slowly build my muscle that way instead.
Today, while watching Football, eating wings and drinking beer I'm going to put in at least 50 pushups over the course of the day. It really sounds puny but just a couple weeks ago the most I could do when "maxing out" was literally 6. So, I'm actually quite happy with my progress and the fact that I can do 10+ without a struggle at this point.
My bedroom is close to empty at this point. Almost every single Blue Ray and Video Game I own has been packed up and transported to my storage unit waiting for the next move. Everything I have been told points to being able to start cleaning/moving back into the house this coming Saturday/Sunday.
Last night after I came home from the boxing matches one of my neighbors approached me asking me if I knew where to buy some weed. She said she was told by someone else that I smoke and would know. I had to disappoint her and send her on her not-so-merry way weedless and sulken.
Speaking of Boxing - Las Vegas was home to two different big events last night. One which was fought at the Thomas n Mac Center (I think) was on PPV and that one included the Chavez Jr fight. The one I watched was billed as the Knock Out Kings and was full of talent surrounding Oscar De La Hoya (however you have to spell that) and was free on Showtime and overall was a good set of fights. These fights took place at the MGM Grand!
Lopez was over matched big time. I believe he stepped up a weight class to fight Canelo and it really showed. Canelo, the champion, looked bigger and better and really beat down the smaller man. Canelo is one of those guys to watch because he might be a force. He is only 22 years old but he's already fought like 48 times so far with no losses and only one draw. However, at this point in his career he is going to start fighting better competition and will be fun to watch.
Currently I am downloading the HBO PPV from last night so I can watch those fights as well.
I am ready for football today. In a previous post I listed some games that I would have bet on if I were a betting man. So, I'm looking forward to seeing how well I guessed those games as I keep track during the season.
Steelers vs Jets today - Big game as the Steelers need to bounce back with a win. I can't say for sure and will feel more confident after the 1st quarter of the season is over, but there is a good chance the Steelers are fighting for a Wild-Card spot again as the Ravens really look to be taking off offensively while still maintaining a damned good defense. We cannot afford to lose a 2nd game to start the season and be two games back of Baltimore and potentially 1 game back of Cincy as they play the inept Browns today.

An Assortment
My good buddy Jason is a huge die-hard Bengals fan who scored tickets to the Monday Night Football game against the Ravens.
Right now it's 41-13 and I'm pretty sure he's miserable as fuck sitting there and watching his team, whom he had huge expectations for, get walked on by the Ravens as if they were playing the Cleveland Browns.
Ouch
At a meeting with a bunch of my peers at work I had my store manager compliment my writing style and the way I convey my messages and then tell me, in front of everyone, that I should probably be a professional blogger. Thought that was a cool vote of confidence.
One game does not make a season. The Steelers might have lost the first game but I'm cool with that. They lost the first game last year and still made it to the playoffs. Manning looks like he didn't take any fucking time off, the guy is sick and deserves to own every passing record there is.
Once again the offensive line decided to crumble during the game, losing both the Right Tackle and the Right Guard during the game and having to play with two back-ups. You cannot win in this league if you cannot keep your guys healthy enough - especially the big dogs who protect the quarterback. This is a QB driven league.
VonMiller is as good as advertised, he makes you look silly. Reminds me of Freeney when he was younger.
My Strat team has a decent start to the year but only one performance that screams amazing. Spiller filling in for an injured Jackson did a great job and will have 4-5 more weeks where he gets almost all the touches. Hoping he can continue to put up good numbers during that time. Rashad Jennings, who I really had high hopes for, decided to blow his opportunity by getting injured which brought MJWhaaaa in to get a bunch of touches.
Tom Brady was Tom Brady, my receivers got a few catches and no one really stood out on Defense.
Worilds had a sack which was nice, one of my Defensive Ends had a sack and one of my Defensive Tackles also grabbed a sack.
The only horse I have in the late game tonight is Ronnie Brown for the Chargers. Hope he breaks out with a good 25 touches and 120 yards rushing, but I'm not expecting it!
Today was my first (and only this week) day off after working the past 15 days straight.
My Manhole is protected.
Finally - today is my parents 26th year wedding anniversary! Twenty Six Fucking years of putting up with each-others shit, bitching and moaning, fighting and making up and mostly importantly 26 years of unconditional love.
These two fine people are the reason why I am who I am and I can never thank them enough for the love and support they have shown me over the course of my few years of existence.
At the end of this month they will be moving one more time, One FINAL time and I hope that I get to see their 50th anniversary.
I hope that one day I am lucky enough to find someone to put up with my shit for even a decade let alone 26 years!

Gay Marriage and the NFL
Now, I did not author any of the below. But sometimes you come across something that just makes you take notice and you say to yourself "Self, why the fuck didn't I think of that?"
This is one of those occasions.
The set up is this.
Baltimore Ravens NFL Star Brendon Ananbadejo is in support of Gay Marriage.
Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr decided he hates the gays and wrote a letter to the owners of the Ravens telling them that they should shut their little gay supporting negro up because he's giving the straights a bad name (unlike what is to follow, these are my words).
So, Punter and wordsmith extraordinaire Chris Kluwe (Minnesota Vikings) who happens to have a gay brother (or something) wrote a letter to the Maryland delegate giving him the what-for.
This letter was published on Deadspin.com and is being pasted below.
I give full credit to Chris Kluwe and Deadspin for this article, I just want my small section of the universe to read it as well.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo has spoken out in favor of a Maryland ballot initiative that would legalize gay marriage. Yahoo has published a letter that Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. wrote last week to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, urging him to "inhibit such expressions from your employee." This is Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe's response to Burns.
Dear Emmett C. Burns Jr.,
I find it inconceivable that you are an elected official of Maryland's state government. Your vitriolic hatred and bigotry make me ashamed and disgusted to think that you are in any way responsible for shaping policy at any level. The views you espouse neglect to consider several fundamental key points, which I will outline in great detail (you may want to hire an intern to help you with the longer words):
1. As I suspect you have not read the Constitution, I would like to remind you that the very first, the VERY FIRST Amendment in this founding document deals with the freedom of speech, particularly the abridgment of said freedom. By using your position as an elected official (when referring to your constituents so as to implicitly threaten the Ravens organization) to state that the Ravens should "inhibit such expressions from your employees," more specifically Brendon Ayanbadejo, not only are you clearly violating the First Amendment, you also come across as a narcissistic fromunda stain. What on earth would possess you to be so mind-boggingly stupid? It baffles me that a man such as yourself, a man who relies on that same First Amendment to pursue your own religious studies without fear of persecution from the state, could somehow justify stifling another person's right to speech. To call that hypocritical would be to do a disservice to the word. Mindfucking obscenely hypocritical starts to approach it a little bit.
2. "Many of your fans are opposed to such a view and feel it has no place in a sport that is strictly for pride, entertainment, and excitement." Holy fucking shitballs. Did you seriously just say that, as someone who's "deeply involved in government task forces on the legacy of slavery in Maryland"? Have you not heard of Kenny Washington? Jackie Robinson? As recently as 1962 the NFL still had segregation, which was only done away with by brave athletes and coaches daring to speak their mind and do the right thing, and you're going to say that political views have "no place in a sport"? I can't even begin to fathom the cognitive dissonance that must be coursing through your rapidly addled mind right now; the mental gymnastics your brain has to tortuously contort itself through to make such a preposterous statement are surely worthy of an Olympic gold medal (the Russian judge gives you a 10 for "beautiful oppressionism").
3. This is more a personal quibble of mine, but why do you hate freedom? Why do you hate the fact that other people want a chance to live their lives and be happy, even though they may believe in something different than you, or act different than you? How does gay marriage, in any way shape or form, affect your life? If gay marriage becomes legal, are you worried that all of a sudden you'll start thinking about penis? "Oh shit. Gay marriage just passed. Gotta get me some of that hot dong action!" Will all of your friends suddenly turn gay and refuse to come to your Sunday Ticket grill-outs? (Unlikely, since gay people enjoy watching football too.)
I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won't come into your house and steal your children. They won't magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster. They won't even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population—rights like Social Security benefits, child care tax credits, Family and Medical Leave to take care of loved ones, and COBRA healthcare for spouses and children. You know what having these rights will make gays? Full-fledged American citizens just like everyone else, with the freedom to pursue happiness and all that entails. Do the civil-rights struggles of the past 200 years mean absolutely nothing to you?
In closing, I would like to say that I hope this letter, in some small way, causes you to reflect upon the magnitude of the colossal foot in mouth clusterfuck you so brazenly unleashed on a man whose only crime was speaking out for something he believed in. Best of luck in the next election; I'm fairly certain you might need it.
Sincerely,
Chris Kluwe
Chris Kluwe
P.S. I've also been vocal as hell about the issue of gay marriage so you can take your "I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing" and shove it in your close-minded, totally lacking in empathy piehole and choke on it. Asshole.

More Football
I'm pretty sure I'll be done talking about football in the near future but today has pretty much been football dominated.
Right now the Cowboys vs Raiders is on TV and I have been knee deep in my Strat draft pretty much all day (even though very few picks have been made) so my mind is 100% tuned-in to football.
So, let me get to my bitch right now. The game is being watered down by instantly reviewing everything at every opportunity, and they are still fucking it up.
Case in point - Raiders first drive and Carson Palmer throws an interception which is returned to the 37 yard line or whatever. They go to commercial while the play is being reviewed (because EVERY single turnover is going to be reviewed this year) and when they come back we get to see some other angles and hear the decision.
The Decision? The play stands.
However, during the replays it clearly shows that while he was making the interception and going to the ground the Raider receiver CLEARLY touched him, which should be down by contact near the 5 yard line. But, I guess that part of the replay got ignored.
If you are reviewing the turnover you should also review how the turnover finished. I'm not talking looking for penalties or anything but placement of the ball should count for something.
I know that these are replacement officials but the guys up in the replay booth are the same as last year (which was made public by the announcers) and they should be giving some sort of guidance.
Here is the confession - pre-season football bores me. I genuinely hate it. I love football once it hits the regular season and post season and can watch pretty much every game every week if I had the ability and opportunity, but pre-season just bores the shit out of me. Position battles, back ups, guys who's names I'll learn long enough to last until the pre-season is over only to be regulated to the practice squad somewhere and hopefully given another shot the next year while competing against all the newly drafted rookie future stud muffins. It's pretty much the same reason why I don't follow college football, just too many new names to learn every year since the change is constant with most players being on a 3 or 4 year rotation at most before becoming professional football players, doctors, lawyers or crack addicts.
In fact, the game is still on but I stopped paying attention after the play I referenced above. I started doing other things like searching Youtube for Isaac Hay's "Chocolate Salty Balls" and the scene where Cartman gets offered to fuck an Asian lady.
I'm like a puppy, easily distracted.
So, two pictures of puppies before I hit publish.

Yeah - It's That Time Again!
I really don't understand how I even exist during football's off season. It must be sheer willpower to get myself through the horrible boring months in order to get back to what I love most about life, my penis football!
My Strat-O-Matic draft officially kicks off tomorrow morning but if the guy with the #1 decides to pick today he can get the ball moving. I currently sit with the #7 pick in the draft but I'm 98% positive that pick will be traded before the 1st pick even gets taken. In fact, after the 1st pick gets taken I've got another trade lined up as well. I'm looking forward to announcing them because both trades will improve the value of my team quite a bit.
In preparation for my draft (which I have not prepared for much other than what I'm doing today) I've got about 4 spreadsheets open that I'm editing and moving things around in. I've got a spreadsheet with how my team currently looks and I've got one with how I think it might look if things fall into place. I've also got a list of players I want to take and players I'm willing to take.
Coming into this draft my Offensive Line resembles the Pittsburgh Steelers - full of holes, but sadly I have no Pouncey to try and hold it all together. I've gotta sure that up a bit but I just can't seem to find a place where I'm willing to draft what is available.
My defensive line is, right now, Really Awful. Like Shitty Titty Gang Bang bad. I've got one player who has good pass rush but can't run stop worth anything and that's it. I need to draft a Starting Defensive End and a nose tackle.
My linebackers are looking better as I've got two Middle Linebackers who are good against the pass and run but I have ZERO outside linebackers. My Defensive Backs will be ok.
All this was typed earlier and instead of hitting delete I'm just going to hit submit. The draft has kicked off officially as the 1st pick was made. I don't have a pick until the end of the 1st round but I'm looking forward to see what is available.
Good night and good blah

About time to get back to church!
Today I'm officially feeling a bit beat up, run down and sore after voluntarily helping to unload and put away the freight truck yesterday.
My first thought was that it would be good exercise and that I could really use the workout. When I arrived I immediately decided to be one of the two people in the truck sending all the merch down the conveyer belt for everyone else to sort and separate. I know that my peeps have a system of pallets set up for every department where the merch is sent so that it can be distributed and I also know that I do not have those memorized and as such if I were one of the ones loading the pallets it would take longer because I'd constantly be searching for where in the hell to put everything.
However, another consideration was the fact that inside the truck it would be about 300 degrees and it would help me to sweat like a MoFo, which is precisely what happened. 2 and a half hours later the truck was empty and I was really feeling like I might need a sponge bath and a change of underwear. Neither of those happened unfortunately and I was stuck walking around with swamp nuts for the remainder of my shift until I got home and was finally able to shower.
All in all I'm quite happy with how well I felt that I contributed to everything and depending on my schedule I'd really like to help out once a week in order to get the hell out of my normal office for a bit and do something else. I don't really feel like this is something management will really let me get away with too much as it's taking an entire day away from me doing my actual job but it never hurts to try.
The overlying issue is that I'm getting to that point with my job that I don't want to be there. I need a change, I need to switch departments and try something new. I search the job postings daily looking for anything that reaches out and grabs me by the balls and says "Apply for this" however part time hardware positions don't really scream excitement.
The other issue that I face is the fact that my current position, while much shittier than before for various reasons, affords me to take off every single Sunday of the year.
Everyone knows that Sunday is the holy day. A day to get in touch with ones maker, eat poorly and have a few (too many) beers. A day to hang out with other members of the brotherhood in celebration of life, liberty and the pursuit of the Stairway to Seven.
Today, for me, the preseason officially begins as the Steelers take on the Eagles. I, however, will be working and not enjoying being there while there is football being played. Doesn't matter that it's preseason, I want to watch my boys and see the position battles. I want to cheer them on live and on TV and not from a video I found online after the fact.
But, it will all be OK because, after all, it really is just the preseason. These are the games that really only matter to a select few who are fighting for a roster spot. It's not like my team has any big time competitions for starting positions going on. This is a time for my new offensive linemen to develop and gel so that they can lead Number 7 and his band of misfits to Number 7. This is a time for the defense to get over its aches and pains and get to the point where once again they are proving that age is just a number and no matter what Warren Sap things, we ain't over the hill - we're primed and ready to be number 1 again, number one with a vengeance.
So, won't everyone join me in church this year as we pray?

Best QB Draft Class Ever
1983 is widely considered to be the best draft class for QB's of all time. In the 1st round of the 1983 draft there were 6 QB's taken but really only 3 of them matter, 4 if you count the ones who went to a Super Bowl.
Dan Marino, Jim Kelly and John Elway with an honorable Mention to Tony Eason who went to the Super Bowl with the Patriots.
Even taking out Eason, you are left with 3 Hall of Fame QB's picked in the 1st round of 1983.
Everyone likes to look back and compare every draft class to this one for a reason, it is the best ever. Until recently no other draft has been able to rival it. That is until the class of 2004 which could very well end up being the best ever.
In 2004 we have Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning and Ben Rothlesberger. These QB's now have 7 years of NFL experience and the statistics are starting to add up.
The class of 1983 has 8 Superbowls (9 if you count Eason) and only two Victories.
After 14 NFL Seasons the 1983 class was ZERO for 9 - it wasn't until John Elway finally racked up two victories at the end of his career that this class, the greatest ever, finally got a W in the biggest game.
The 2004 class has been around for 7 years and is already 4-1. That is Half the seasons, Twice the amount of Wins and about half the amount of total Super Bowls. I'm really looking forward to the next 7 years and watching these 3 play because all are capable of getting another 2 each. When all is said an done this is going to go down as the greatest QB class in NFL history supplanting the 1983 class.
I'm looking forward to following the progression of next years QB crop as well because they have a lot of positive talk and energy surrounding them. Luck, RG3 and Tannehill (or whatever). Lets look back in 7 years and see what they have collectively done for and to the NFL to see if they'll be able to be a trio that is talked about in the same class as 1983 and 2004 or if they'll end up (like most every other class that is highly touted) overrated.
Dan Marino - 1 Super Bowl - 9 Pro Bowls - 10/17 Playoffs
Jim Kelly - 4 Super Bowls - 4 Pro Bowls - 8/11 Playoffs
John Elway - 5 Super Bowls - 9 Pro Bowls - 10/16 Playoffs
10 Super Bowls - 22 Pro Bowls - 28 Playoff Appearances
Ben Rothlisberger - 3 Super Bowls - 2 Pro Bowls - 5/7 Playoffs
Eli Manning - 2 Super Bowls - 2 Pro Bowls - 4/7 Playoffs
Phillip Rivers - 0 Super Bowls - 4 Pro Bowls - 3/7 Playoffs
5 Super Bowls - 8 Pro Bowls - 12 Playoff Appearances

WTF Dolphins and 9ers, WTF
Times like this I'm glad that I'm a life long fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
There are two teams in the NFL who could be completely screwing themselves over and while I'm happy to see any non-Steelers team screw themselves (would prefer in division, you hear me Baltimore?) I can't help but wonder if the people in charge really know what they are doing sometimes.
Lets look at the San Francisco 49ers to start. Last year though a huge dominating defense and good play by Alex Smith they went to the NFC Championship game and barely lost. A young player made some young-player-in-big-game-mistakes that ultimately cost them the chance to face New England to determine the NFL's best team.
So, this off season Coach Harbaugh said that he believes in Smith and that Smith is his man even though Alex Smith is a free agent. The '9ers never locked him up and now he is out and about whoring himself to other teams trying to find someone interested so that he can look forward to his future.
Meanwhile the '9ers were secretly courting and working out Peyton Manning who has narrowed his search down to 3 teams that he will play for next year; Titans, Bronco's and 49ers.
Here's the tricky part, the 49ers could be shooting themselves in the foot because they never locked up Alex Smith. Smith is out visiting with the Dolphins and sleeping with their Cheerleaders to see if he'd be comfortable in the humidity in Miami playing for retired folks, the 3 remaining Dolphins from '72 and assorted swamp gators (meanwhile the Florida Gators seem to manage to draw in 200x the amount of fans as they have the young hipster crowds).
So, If Alex Smith and the Dolphins wrap things up and reach an agreement come Monday and sometime by the end of the week (hopefully Peyton doesn't drag this out like that f'n Lebron saga sports fans had to endure) Peyton decides he's going to continue to play in the AFC and not join the 49ers then they are left holding their crotches and praying for divine intervention because Kaepernick is NOT going to be the guy who gets them over the hump into the Super Bowl.
Meanwhile over in the other fish pond (oh aren't I so clever?) the Dolphins were working their arses off to try and secure Peyton Manning, going as far as to dumping their best WR who is a trouble maker and would probably struggle in the Peyton Offense.
Peyton tells them to pound salt and the Phins are left going after Matt Flynn who everyone thought would be a shoe-in because of recent coaching changes (guy defected from Green Bay to Miami). However Flynn gave the Phins a by FU by signing with the Seahawks in a move that saw the 3 surviving members of the '72 Phins (and all their fans everywhere) opening bottles of booze and drinking heavily enough that they can hibernate till the season starts when they'll wake up and feel like they are watching re-runs when Matt Moore takes the snaps.
However, after being left at the alter for the 3rd time in two seasons (remember they got ditched by Harbaugh who choose San Fran over Miami) they turned their focus to Alex Smith. Whether or not Smith ends up playing for the Phins or elsewhere is another matter, but they are running out of options to go after this off season.
Lets say that Smith does sign elsewhere (we'll say Tennessee for simplicity sake) that leave the Dolphins turning to Matt Moore again.
If you are Matt Moore, how good to you feel about life? You took over after Henne stunk the joint up and gave the team a spark and let them to multiple victories. In fact, at one point, some of the finer folk on that ESPN network were saying you were playing as one of the best QB's in the league (but need to get better consistency to stay there instead of just peaking there and dropping back down ala the other Manning, Eli).
You just watched the spot you thought you earned, starter, Be offered to 3 other players who were not even on the roster last year before they finally turned to you and say "well, no one else will fuck us, looks like we're stuck with you."
Confidence? I think not.
And that's the other side of the pigskin!
